$61,770 Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technician Blueprint: The Seat Next to the Driver's Seat [2026]
These seats are retiring. AI can't fill them.
The capital is going into taking the driver out of the truck. Nobody is funding the removal of the person who keeps the truck alive. This is the blueprint for that seat.
REPLACEMENT RATIO
Twenty-to-one. And not all of it is retirement.
- Diesel (SOC 49-3031): 24,400 openings a year. Employment grows 11,400 across the entire decade, about 1,140 a year. The other ~23,260 openings a year are someone leaving the seat. Roughly twenty replacement openings for every growth opening. (BLS, 2025–35)
- Heavy equipment (SOC 49-3040): 20,300 openings a year, ~1,710 from growth. About eleven-to-one, with 7% growth stacked on top. (BLS, 2025–35)
- Combined: 44,700 openings a year. Roughly fifteen-to-one.
- The honest split: BLS separations data from the prior projection cycle, as reported by ATRI, put diesel exits at ~9,700 a year retiring and ~15,100 a year changing occupations. This seat is aging out and walking out. The walk-out number is the useful one. It tells you which shops to avoid, and the pay table below tells you which ones those are.
- Supply: 11,947 diesel program completions (AY 2023–24) against 26,692 new entrants needed per year. Schools cover 44% of demand. (TechForce 2026, prior BLS cycle)
WILL AI TAKE THIS JOB?
No.
The rank: Microsoft Research scored 785 occupations on how much of the work today's AI chatbots can actually do. Diesel mechanics rank #523, with a score of 0.099 against a median of 0.143. Say it this way: bottom third of every job in America for AI exposure.
The split: 98% of the work activities in this job are physical, the highest share on this board. What AI touches: looking up the fault code, pulling the service bulletin, finding the part number, writing up the repair order. What it doesn't: finding the chafed harness, pulling the injector, bleeding the brakes, the road test. The rest is still you.
The honest limit: the study measures chatbots, not robots. It says nothing about autonomy. So here is autonomy: the money is aimed at the driver's seat, and the companies building driverless trucks say in their own words that higher utilization means more frequent preventive maintenance. Ryder embedded its technicians inside Aurora's terminal for exactly that reason.

Is This You?
- You already fix things, for a paycheck or for free: cars, farm equipment, military vehicles, your own truck. Diagnosis is the part you like.
- You want hourly pay with overtime, home at night, in work nobody can offshore, and you are fine being dirty by 9 a.m.
- You are in a seat with a visible ceiling: flat-rate auto tech near $50K, CDL driver reading the autonomy headlines from behind the wheel, lube bay or warehouse job with no ladder attached.
All three: you are already half in the seat. Go straight to the first move. Two of three: still worth the blueprint.
NOT YOUR NEXT MOVE IF
- Your body is already voting no. BLS is blunt: heavy parts, awkward positions, sprains and cuts are common. Farm equipment mechanics carry one of the highest injury rates of any occupation. Look at the Water & Wastewater Operator seat instead.
- You want controls, PLCs, and electrical troubleshooting more than engines and hydraulics. That is the Industrial Maintenance Technician or the Electrician.
- You want the top of the wage board for a two-year credential. The Aircraft Maintenance Technician median runs about $18K higher, with a federal license behind it.
IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE
Ask the tool question. Fifteen minutes.
Pull up three postings, one from each employer class: your city or county fleet maintenance shop, an equipment or engine dealer (search "ThinkBIG" at dealertechjobs.caterpillar.com for the sponsored-apprentice version), and a truck leasing or for-hire fleet shop. For each one, write down three answers:
- What is the starting hourly wage?
- Who pays for school and manufacturer training?
- Who buys the tools?
Why this one: ATRI found the upfront cost of tools is the most common barrier technicians report early in their careers. TechForce found nearly 46% of its scholarship applicants name tools, supplies, and housing as the primary obstacle, ahead of tuition. Some dealers cover tuition, books, tools, and a toolbox for sponsored students. Some shops cover nothing. The answers sort the employers for you before you ever apply.
What It Pays, Reconciled
SOC 49-3031 Bus and Truck Mechanics and Diesel Engine Specialists, with companion group 49-3040 Heavy Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Service Technicians. BLS OEWS, May 2025.
- Diesel: median $61,770 ($29.70/hr). 10th percentile $44,530. 90th percentile $88,740. 316,000 jobs.
- Heavy equipment group: median $63,850 ($30.70/hr). 10th percentile $45,460. 90th percentile $93,450. 242,400 jobs.
- The seat next door: heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, median $58,640. The technician out-earns the driver by about $3,100 and sleeps at home.
- Negotiating anchor: $71,460. That is the local government fleet median for this exact SOC. It is a public number for public employers. Use it, not the truck-stop number.
| Employer class | Median | The read |
|---|---|---|
| Local government fleets (diesel) | $71,460 | 9% of diesel jobs. Buses, plows, fire apparatus, refuse trucks. The quiet top of the board. |
| Government (heavy equipment) | $70,350 | Road departments, DOTs, public works. |
| Transportation and warehousing (heavy equipment) | $68,600 | Includes rail. Rail car repairers alone: $67,530. |
| Mobile heavy equipment mechanics (all employers) | $65,510 | 180,300 jobs. Dozers, cranes, excavators, mining iron. |
| Heavy and civil engineering construction | $63,770 | Contractor-owned fleets. Field service lives here. |
| Wholesale trade (diesel) | $63,070 | 13% of diesel jobs. Equipment, engine, and heavy truck dealers. Manufacturer training on the employer's dime. |
| Automotive repair and maintenance (diesel) | $60,330 | Independent shops. Widest variance. |
| Rental and leasing | $60,220 diesel $61,620 heavy | Truck leasing and equipment rental. High-volume PM work. A common front door. |
| Truck transportation (diesel) | $59,820 | 18% of diesel jobs. The largest employer and the lowest median on the table. |
| Farm equipment | $56,550 | Fastest growth in the group at 11%. Harvest season runs six or seven 12-hour days. |
The reconciliation: same SOC, same wrench, $11,640 between the largest employer class and the best-paying one. That gap is where the 15,100 a year who walk out went wrong. They did not pick the wrong trade. They picked the wrong shop.
No SOC isolates field service or power-generation technicians, so there is no clean federal wage for them. BLS notes that more experienced technicians specialize in field service and that overtime is common. Treat any posted number above the 90th percentile as a posting, not a median.
Why the Seat Exists (Three Facts)
Fact one: the shops are already short, and the pipeline covers less than half.
- 65.5% of diesel shops were understaffed in 2025, with 19.3% of positions unfilled on average. One bay in five is empty. (ATRI, Aug 2025)
- 61.8% of new diesel technicians entered with no formal training. Shops spend an average of 357 hours and $8,211 in trainee wages to bring each one up. (ATRI)
- Truck driver headcount grew 30% from 2014 to 2024. Technician headcount grew 23%. The ratio went from 6.8 drivers per tech to 7.2. (ATRI)
- Read it the TMZ way: empty bays are the signal, not the warning. A shop that is short one tech in five will train you, because it has no other option.
Fact two: the door just got cheaper.
- Workforce Pell took effect July 1, 2026. Pell Grants now reach programs of 150 to 599 clock hours, 8 to 15 weeks, up to $7,395 prorated. Programs need state approval and must hit 70% completion and 70% placement.
- 92% of technician program completions nationally are certificates, not degrees. 402 institutions reported diesel completions last year. (TechForce 2026)
- Ask the school one question: "Is this diesel certificate approved for Workforce Pell in this state yet?" If the answer is no, ask which one is.
Fact three: the iron is multiplying, and the AI economy is buying it.
- Caterpillar's Q2 2026 (reported Aug 4): record $20.5B quarter, record $72.1B backlog, up 92% in a year. Power generation sales up 29%, predominantly data center projects. North American construction sales up 50%.
- Every data center ships with diesel or gas standby generation. Every site gets cleared by dozers and excavators. Caterpillar's dealer apprenticeship now runs an Electric Power Generation track alongside heavy equipment.
- Aurora tripled its driverless truck network to 10 routes in February 2026 and put its second-generation trucks into service in July, with hardware built for a million-mile life. Ryder technicians maintain the tractors. The driver's seat is being automated. The service bay is being staffed.
- BLS flags one real headwind: last-mile delivery fleets are going electric, and electric trucks need less maintenance. Long-haul, vocational, construction, rail, and standby power are not on that curve yet.
Paths In
| Where you are | The path | Time and cost | Evidence That Converts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto, lube, or tire tech | Lateral into a fleet, leasing, or municipal shop as a PM technician. Add ASE medium/heavy truck tests as you go. | Weeks. Test fees only. | Ten repair orders written complaint, cause, correction. Your comeback rate. Any ASE certs you already hold. |
| CDL driver | Your own carrier's shop first. Ask the maintenance manager about an apprentice or PM tech opening before you ask anyone else. | Weeks to months. Often zero cost. | The CDL itself (BLS: techs may need one to road-test). Your pre-trip inspection fluency. A clean record of the defects you wrote up that turned out to be real. |
| Veteran mechanic (wheeled vehicle, power generation, construction equipment) | Direct hire at a dealer, municipal fleet, or power-generation service shop. TechForce names returning veterans as a priority pipeline. | Immediate. GI Bill covers any gap training. | Your training record translated into systems: diesel engines, hydraulics, 24-volt electrical, generator sets. Hours and equipment types, not job titles. |
| No experience, any age | Dealer-sponsored apprenticeship. Caterpillar ThinkBIG: a dealer hires you, then alternates eight-week classroom and paid internship blocks for two years to an associate degree. Other manufacturers run similar programs. | Two years, paid during internships. Coverage varies by dealer. Some pay tuition, books, tools, and toolbox. Ask. | The dealer's mechanical aptitude test. One thing you tore down and rebuilt, with photos and what you found. The sponsorship interview is the hiring event. |
| No experience, no sponsor yet | Community college diesel certificate. Check Workforce Pell approval. Then apply to the understaffed shops in Fact one. | 8 weeks to 12 months. Pell-eligible where the state has approved the program. | ATRI found 30%+ of program graduates unqualified in 20 core skills. So bring proof of the skills, not the certificate: a completed PM inspection sheet, a wiring diagram you traced, an air brake system you can draw from memory. |
First 12 Months
| Months | The work | Trigger metric |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Preventive maintenance. Fluids, filters, tires, lights, inspections. Learn the shop's checklist cold. | A full PM done solo inside the shop's standard time, zero comebacks for 30 days. |
| 3–6 | Brakes, air systems, suspension, steering. The safety-critical systems. | First ASE medium/heavy truck test passed. The credential posts when the experience requirement is met. The pass is yours now. |
| 6–9 | Electrical and diagnostics. Own the scan tool, the wiring diagram, and the emissions aftertreatment system. | You are the one other techs hand the intermittent electrical fault to. |
| 9–12 | Manufacturer training, paid by the employer. BLS: employers send technicians to manufacturer classes, and certification usually commands higher pay. | First manufacturer certification on file. Then ask the rung question: "What is the wage step for lead tech or field service, and which cert gates it?" |
| Month 12 audit | If the shop has not paid for one training class in a year, you are in the turnover statistic waiting to happen. ATRI: 18.1% turnover at understaffed shops, 7.8% at fully staffed ones. | Change employer class. Do not change occupations. Take your repair-order file to the $71,460 column. |
The second rung: every modern truck and machine is a rolling network of sensors and controllers reporting to a fleet telematics platform. The technician who reads that data and catches the failure before the roadside call is the bridge to the Connected Operations Board.
Scot Free Take
Everybody is watching the driver's seat. Billions of dollars, a dozen companies, a headline a week — all aimed at getting the human out from behind the wheel. Fine. Watch where the money is not going. Nobody is raising a round to automate the person under the truck. You can't. Ninety-eight percent of this job is hands on steel.
And here is the part the autonomy people say out loud if you read their own press releases — a truck with no driver doesn't stop for ten hours of sleep. It runs. A truck that runs more wears out faster. The driverless future needs more maintenance, not less. The seat next to the driver's seat was always the safer one. Now it's the one with the tailwind.
But I'm not going to sell you the trade without the audit finding. Fifteen thousand people a year walk out of this occupation — not retire, walk. Same data, same SOC, and there's an $11,640 gap between the biggest employer class and the best one. That's not a trade problem. That's a shop problem. The guy who quit diesel after three years in a for-hire fleet bay that never bought him a tool or sent him to a class didn't fail. He just never saw the table you just read.
Pick the employer before you pick the school. Ask the tool question. The shop that answers "we do" three times is the one that plans to keep you.

The complacency tax on this seat is $11,640 a year.
That is the distance between the shop most people land in and the shop the data says to aim for. You already know the first move: three postings, three questions, fifteen minutes. The second move is getting in front of the service manager without going through the application pile.
