- You want to be paid to learn a trade, not pay to learn one — and the idea of a four-year degree with a job search at the end feels like the wrong bet.
- You can handle the physical side: ladders, crawlspaces, weather, and a job site that starts at 6am.
- You want a license that gives you leverage — the ability to walk to the shop across town that pays $2 more an hour, or to hang your own shingle in ten years.
- All three: this is the seat. Two of three: read the money and the first move; the apprenticeship model fixes most gaps.
- You need to be a journeyman in under four years. The apprenticeship is 4–5 years by design. You are paid the whole way, but the license is at the end. An apprentice starting today is a journeyman in 2030 at the earliest.
- You cannot pass an algebra-and-reading aptitude test. Every registered apprenticeship gates on one. It is not hard, but it is real, and it is the first filter.

- The median hides the shape of the career. An apprentice starts around 40–50% of journeyman scale and steps up every six to twelve months. The Virginia apprentice Fortune profiled earned $42,000 in year one and expected $71,000 at journeyman. The median is the middle of a ladder you climb with a paycheck in hand.
- The datacenter premium is real and documented: projects are paying 25–30% above standard commercial rates and offering $5,000–$10,000 signing bonuses. Microsoft is relocating electricians from 75+ miles away. A journeyman on hyperscale work in 2026 is a six-figure earner.
- Negotiating anchor: your local’s scale is public. Union journeyman rates in most metros run $35–$55/hour plus a benefits package worth another $15–$25/hour. Non-union is a range, not a scale — which is where the leverage lives.

Why the Seat Exists in 2026 (Three Facts)
- The trade is aging out at 20,000 a year. Almost 30% of union electricians are between 50 and 70 (Fortune). BLS projects 9% growth through 2034 — faster than average — but growth is the small number. Nine of every ten openings are someone leaving. The pipeline is a 4–5 year apprenticeship, which means today’s shortage was locked in by the enrollment decisions of 2021.
- The datacenter buildout runs on electricians before it runs on anything else. Electrical work is 45–70% of datacenter construction cost (IBEW). In March 2026, Microsoft’s president called the electrician shortage the number-one problem in U.S. datacenter expansion. Oracle’s builds for OpenAI slipped a year. Google’s policy shop warned the shortage may constrain America’s ability to build AI infrastructure at all. Hyperscaler capex is running roughly $700 billion for 2026. Every dollar of it needs a licensed electrician in the critical path.
- The door is paid, and it just got funded. A registered apprenticeship is a job: you earn from day one, no tuition, and the classroom hours are covered. Commercial apprenticeship applications rose 70% between 2022 and 2024, and about 60% of Gen Z say they plan to pursue trade work. - The credential: State journeyman license after the apprenticeship, then master license with additional experience and exam. Licensing is state-specific; the apprenticeship is nationally registered with the Department of Labor.
- Union or non-union: The Electrical Training Alliance (NECA/IBEW) runs the union JATCs. IEC and ABC run the non-union programs. Both are DOL-registered, both are paid, both end in the same state license. The union path has a published wage scale and a benefits package; the non-union path has more employer variety and negotiating room. Neither is wrong.

There is a version of the AI story where the machines take everyone’s job. Then there is the version Microsoft’s president told a room in March: the number-one problem with building AI in America is that there are not enough electricians to wire the buildings it runs in. Both stories are about the same technology. Only one of them has a payroll attached.
The cable-not-code piece on this site made the argument from the top down: the boom is short half a million people who pull cable. This blueprint makes it from the bottom up. Nine of every ten electrician openings this decade are someone retiring. The apprenticeship pays from day one. The datacenter contractors are paying 30% over scale and relocating people from 75 miles out because the local pool is empty. And a 22-year-old apprentice in Newport News said the thing this whole board is built on better than I could: AI hasn’t found a way to turn the wrench yet.
The Lineworker runs the transmission. The electrician wires the building. Between them, they are the physical layer under every AI decision, and they are both retiring faster than the pipeline replaces them. Somebody is going to wire the datacenter. The apprenticeship window opens twice a year. Find the date.
