You just finished a computer science degree — and unlike the finance and mechanical engineering grads reading their blueprints, you’ve been marinating in doom headlines for two years. Tech layoffs. AI writing code. “Learn to code” jokes turned back on the people who did. And underneath it, the same wall everyone else hits: “entry-level” postings demanding two to five years of experience. We call that the 25RE wall.

This blueprint was built specifically for you: the CS grad standing on Rung 0 — zero years, full credential — trying to figure out whether the degree you just earned is a golden ticket or a sunk cost, because the internet insists it’s both.

The Market Truth (Both Things Are True)

Read that table again, because it doesn’t look like any other degree’s. CS is simultaneously the highest-paying category with the biggest raise (NACE), a top-3 demand degree with 60% of employers hiring — and the major with one of the worst new-grad unemployment rates in the country, at 7.0% per the New York Fed, while overall recent-grad unemployment sits around 5.7%.

The doom headlines and the hype headlines each report half the table. The whole table says: the market bifurcated. The generalist junior seat — the “I know some Python, hire me and train me” job — contracted hard after the 2022 boom, squeezed by layoff backfill and AI tools doing exactly that tier of work. Meanwhile the specialized entry lanes — infrastructure, data, quality automation, security, AI-adjacent operations — kept hiring. BLS still projects 15% growth and ~129,200 annual openings for the developer/QA group through 2034, most of them replacement openings that exist whether or not any company grows.

And the NY Fed’s underemployment number is the tell: under 20% for CS versus 42% across all majors. Translation — fewer CS grads get in quickly, but the ones who get in are doing degree-level work at the second-highest early-career pay of any major ($87,000 median). Harder door, better room. Your whole strategy follows from that one sentence: stop aiming at the shrinking seat and aim at the lanes still hiring.

Where This Ladder Goes

The BLS median for software developers is $133,080 — the middle of the profession — with the top decile approaching $200K in base salary alone, before the equity that defines senior tech compensation. What Employers Actually Want (They Told Us)

Two findings from NACE’s Job Outlook 2026 research, and they matter double in a bifurcated market:

1. The tiebreaker is internship experience. Employers rank an internship — with their organization or industry — as the most influential factor between otherwise equal candidates. No internship? In CS you hold an advantage no other major gets: your evidence can be live. A deployed project with real users beats a line on anyone’s resume.

2. They want evidence, not adjectives. Employers say they’re seeking graduates who provide evidence of problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. Evidence is their word. “Proficient in React and Python” is an adjective. A GitHub repo with a README that explains the problem, the architecture, the tradeoffs you weighed, and the tests that prove it works — that’s evidence, and the README matters more than the code. It’s your communication skills, demonstrated, not claimed.

Your First 12 Months on Rung 0

Months 1–3: Learn the system around the code: the deploy pipeline, the review culture, the incident process, who owns what. Ship small things fast and ask the questions everyone else is afraid to ask — new-grad immunity expires in about a quarter; spend it.

Months 4–8: Own something in production. A service, a test suite, a data pipeline — yours end to end, with your name in the on-call rotation or the CODEOWNERS file. Volunteer for incident duty; nothing teaches architecture like watching it fail at 2 a.m., and incident stories are senior-interview currency.

Months 9–12: Check your trigger metrics. You’re ready to reach for Rung 1 when three things are true: code you own is depended on by others, you’ve handled real incidents or measurably improved reliability or performance, and you can explain your system’s architecture — and what it costs to run — without notes. Everyone in your class is aiming at the one door that shrank — the generalist junior seat at a famous company — and calling the whole field dead when it doesn’t open. Meanwhile the verification lanes are wide open, because AI made them more necessary, not less. Somebody has to prove the machine-generated code actually works.
