Somewhere this quarter, in a budget review at a company you’ve heard of, a CFO is staring at a cloud invoice that grew 40% year over year and asking the room a question nobody can answer: “What exactly are we paying for?” Not rhetorically — literally. Which products, which customers, which decisions produced this number? The room has engineers who can name every service and finance people who can name every account code, and no one who can connect the two.

How a Bill Became a Crisis

And make the bill mean something — unit economics: cost per customer, per transaction, per AI-model call — the numbers that tell a business whether the product it’s scaling actually makes money as it grows. In the AI era, that third movement is becoming the most important question in software economics, and there are almost no incumbents in it.
